The last few weeks on the floating island had been rather quiet for Keiya and Emerald. After the incident with Huckfu, they had been taking some time out so that Keiya could study some books and learn the history of the magical world. The whole event had opened his eyes to just how different this world was from his own. So very different indeed... But today he felt the need to get out and stretch his legs. "I'm sick of these walls Emmy... Let's go out to the town for a while eh?" He suggested, rising out of his desk chair.
"That seems like a good idea... You could use the exercise" She teased, jumping down from the bed and walking over to the door. Keiya, now used to her jesting, simply chuckled and closed the book he had been reading.
"Besides... I think I might buy a book I heard about around the academy. Supposedly it contains some of my family's magical history somewhere in it." He added, casually slipping his jacket on. He walked over to the oak door of his dorm, and clicked it open, stepping out into the hall, taking note of a few passers by. He produced a rather old looking golden key which fit perfectly into his room's lock, and with a clunk of the tumblers, the door was secured. He pocketed the key and casually strolled towards the stairs leading to the ground level.
It was a warm sunny day, a cool breeze blowing in from the east. It was days like these that Keiya enjoyed the most. Emerald also loved the warm feeling of the sun as it shone across her black coat. The breeze making her feel very comfortable as she paced alongside Keiya.
Stepping into the city, it was easy to see that the pair weren't the only two who enjoyed days like these. The streets were filled with folk, browsing the various open markets, having lunch and meeting with friends. Keiya happened by a rather nice looking book stand, where a kindly woman stood, rearranging books by author. Knowing the title of the book he was looking for, he didn't bother her, as he browsed the various shelves. He had all day to look, and he was rather enjoying the atmosphere.

The sun shone down warmly on the city of Babylos. As if a warm blanket covered all the people in the city. Letting them stay warm and happy. On such a beautiful day there were many people about the city. Enjoying the gentle breeze, the warm sun, the puffy soft clouds that floated by casting shadow on the city. It was one of those perfect days in life.
It was unusual for the girl to leave the academy. Yet more and more she was gaining strength. Not physical strength, the girl thin and sweet as she was would never really have much physical strength. For the blonde it was emotional and personal strength. She was learning to be strong. Learning. Yet still fear dogged her path. Her past haunted her. But everyday was a fight and Madelyn was trying to win.
She walked through the city. Her hair up in a pony tail as normal the platinum lockes falling down around her waist. She wore a short summer dress today something that was rare for her as the girl felt more comfortable in jeans. The dress was a light green color, apple green, and made of soft cotton. The spaghetti straps lay over her thin shoulders and the dress was tight across her bust and flowed out into a skirt that hit her lower thigh just right. Around her neck was a small white gold necklace that had a musical note charm dangling from it.
Over her shoulder was a small bag that was crocheted that carried what she needed to be here out in the city today. Her left hand carried her shopping bags. One from a jewelry store and one from a music store. Now Madelyn walked looking for her next store. No real idea in mind but she was not ready to go back to her dorm yet. She felt good just being her and trying not to cringe at the sight of every male that crossed her path.
Yet, one however made her stop in her path. Her white tennis shoes no longer grinding against the pavement. Was that.. him? She bit her lower lip watching for a moment. Yet.. it had to be because there was none other than Emmy, his familiar. Her face lit up like a Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. There was Keiya!! Her steps now laced with purpose she continued walking only this time she had a destination in mind.
Walking up to Keiya the first thing she did was hug the cat. Emerald or Emmy as he called her was sweet and had helped her get to know the older mage on the first day they had met. Madelyn had a soft spot for animals and so Emmy got the first hug. She stood after scratching Emmy between the ears and hugged Keiya. To say Madelyn, once you earned her trust, was a touchy person would be an understatement. With the lack of speech she used her hands to help communicate feelings as well as her eyes.
She pulled back from the hug and waived at him with a bright smile on her face and her eyes light with happiness. Her life had become so much better these days. And it showed in her very being.

It was turning out to be a bloody rotten day for Varys. All this day had been devoted to the study of his former Master, even going back to the location of the labrotory his Master had called home. Though now it somehow smelled worse than before due to his entrails being spread around the his chambers and never cleaned.
The building was torn apart in search of information of his master, his madness even bid him so far as to bring out Schrägstrich from himself and claw at the walls for secrets. Still no matter how hard he looked he found nothing other than the name Fierasche and Dementia. It was proving pointless to say and that finally led him out into the light.
Varys made sure his clothes covered him entirely as to keep the sun from harming his skin. It was an annoying orb to say the least, but there was little to do but endure the thing. Varys was wandering from bookstore to bookstore in search of the names Dementia and Fierasche. This bookstore was little different, except he found himself across from a man with a strange set of eyes. It was intruiging...one without a pupil could be one that was blind.
"Oh I wonder I do wonder, can he see?"
A blind eye made people uncomfortable and could somehow be found in a nightmare and perhaps someday used to further his power, but only if it was really blind. Varys would test it, His hand slid forward, making sure to be out of view of the pupiled eye but in full view of the pupil-less one. Then the hand itself would begin to change, a small change. It would become the hand of Teufel, and the pain that one cause Varys in changing was immense.
As the hand changed Varys' face twisted into a painful grimace. Had Varys had any feelings for the girl that soon strode up he might have been sorry she had the sight to witness this small change. But Varys didn't particularly care and more importantly he had to know. If he didn't, he wouldn't know what to do.

Keiya had not been searching for very long, when he finally found what he searched for... A book entitled 'Genealogy Of The 19th Century'. Supposedly, a passing herbology teacher had noticed his last name in the book a few days ago when he was browsing casually after picking up his copy of 'Dragon Proofing Your Ice Garden'. Keiya had become absorbed in it's pages as he flipped through the book, searching for the name Tenpouin. Suddenly, he felt Emmy's presence within his mind strengthen as she Silently spoke in a sing song voice within his mind. 'You'll never believe who just arrived' She happily announced. Keiya barely responded, still absorbed in his book. However, his attention was severely diverted when he felt two slender arms wrap themselves around his waist. Glancing down, his eyes caught sight of the young miss Madelyn, a small and modest girl he had met a week or so ago, and apparently earned the trust of.
"Madelyn? Well well well! You're looking especially lovely today" He greeted her cheerfully. He gently placed his hand on her head, patting it gently in a caring way. "Fancy meeting you here outside the Academy. I'm glad to see that you're feeling more confident than when we first met. You seemed awfully frightened of everyone on that day." He mused as Emmy's attention was drawn behind Keiya.
'Behind you Keiya' Emerald warned. Keiya's face grew serious as out of the corner of his eye, he saw a hand appear, and begin to deform... Instantly, he stepped forward swiftly, placing himself between the stranger and Madelyn. It was almost a reflex reaction...
"Who are you?" He asked sternly making sure to keep the small girl well beyond the reach of the 24 year old. "Be more careful where you wave such magic about... You never know the effect it will have on fragile people..." He added, putting his hand behind himself, giving Madelyn something thing to grab should she need it.

There were few people in the world that the young blonde could trust. In all her sixteen years it had amounted to three. Keiya, Lucian, and Jonathan. Not yet, had she met someone else that had been able to get her trust immediatly. Even Lucian and Keiya had both had to work hard to get the girl to calm down and realize that they meant her no harm.
She looked up into the eyes of the second person she had ever grown to trust and her eyes smiled as did she. Her eyes were the main source of her emotions but her face showed it as well. She had many different ways of speaking without words her eyes were just one of them. She heard his voice and smiled as he touched her gently and told her she looked nice.
A blush crossed the blonde's face at this remark as she was still unused to such attention. Yet suddenly she looked up to look at Keiya again but her eyes landed on a new arrival one whose hand was.. shifting. Keiya instantly blocked her from view yet too late. She was already afraid. The carefree girl of the moment before was no longer as the scared and timid Madelyn took the reigns once more.
She didn't even hear anything they said. She was running through her mind all the horrors of her past. In her moment of panic and fear they decided to attack her. All the times.. all the days.. all the pain came up for the girl and as Keiya's hand came back she clutched it. She was so afraid. Shaking. Trembling. Madelyn was indeed once more her old self.
Why .. why had she come out today? She had known that something would happen yet had decided to try anyway. And here it was. That something. And she had been right. Trying not to run or cry. Suddenly feeling rather naked without her flute here. Yet she could sing if need be. If Keiya needed help she would be there to do it. Trembling.. but ready.

"The eye isn't blind? How isn't it blind? Why not?"
Varys growled out agitated both by the pain of his shift and the fact this one could see from both eyes it seemed. It was annoying and angered Varys. Had he not thought better of it Teufel might have been released upon the bookstore. Of couse that would be bad very very bad, for him and the bookstore.
Varys grasped the nightmarish hand by the wrist and began forcing it back to it's proper form. Teufel wasn't at all happy about this, but it didn't have a choice. It was Varys' magic that made him and could unmake just as easily. It was about this time Varys began catching what was said towards him. He looked up into the mans eyes unflinchingly. His own showing a torment and ferciocity that could only come from a partially mad man.
"I'm Varys. Though it's very unkind to ask for a name without giving yours first. I really shouldn't even tell you my name you know. It's rather rude of you to both not be blind and to not give your name first."
Of course, Varys overlapped on the mans second statement slightly. He caught the tail end and that was enough for him to burst out into a crooked grin. The thought was amusing. The man thought Varys didn't know that his Nightmares could scar people for the rest of their lives.
"Oh I know what it will do to them. It will scare them, it will scar them. It will keep them from hurting me ever again. Oh yes it will."
Varys leaned over just then to try to look around the man to the little girl. It would be amusing to see the girl and more importantly see how old she was. Varys wondered if she was old enough to resist the fear slightly or not. She couldn't have been that much older than when Varys had started his training after all.
"Little girls shouldn't be so afraid of such little things though. No, there's much more to be afraid of. Like when the little things become big things and they wish to tear people apart...."
Varys chuckled, he didn't mean his last words in a malicious way. It was more a joke to him. Such typical nightmares were nothing to him and he thought it'd be normal for them to be joked about with others. It was not unusual for him after all.

"You leave her alone" Keiya said menacingly, his brow furrowed in a scowl. "You know nothing of the child, and it is best it stays that way. If you so require an introduction, my name is Keiya... And this eye of mine see's far more clearly than you'd think..." He of course, referred to his right eye. It was a genetic trait that had been passed down through his family forcefully by casting a curse upon their children while they were still in the womb... The eye was a magical one, and it's ability's far surpassed that of a regular eye. But Keiya was not one to talk so openly about it's true nature. "Why should you care if I can see or not anyway?" He asked, his face still stern as his eyes locked with those of the madman.
Carefully, he squeezed Madelyn's hand back, hoping that she would be able to hold on just a little longer... He was genuinely worried about her, as he knew that the man's transformation could very possibly brought up terrible memory's of her past. "It's ok... You're safe as long as I'm here..." He whispered behind himself, his eyes still locked on the man as he turned his head. Emerald stood in a cautious stance, high atop the bookshelf she had just climbed.
It was at that point that the young lady who had been organising the books just a few minutes ago, noticed the tense stance of the two men, and the terrified girl. "Hey! You two better not start a fight in here or so help me you'll be sorry!" She yelled out with an impatient glare. Seeing as they were in Babylos, it was quite conceivable that she may be quite powerful too... Especially with all the tomes of magic she had around to read...

"Little girls shouldn't be so afraid of such little things though. No, there's much more to be afraid of. Like when the little things become big things and they wish to tear people apart...."
Trembling even more. She was going to die. Or be beaten. Either way she would hope for death. Jonathan would be angry if she was hurt yet he wasn't here to protect her. Keiya, her sweet friend was there trying to protect her. She felt his hand give her a squeeze and she stepped up to him a little more laying her head on his back gently.
She heard Keiya's whisper and she closed her eyes trying to be strong but failing miserably. There were tears comeing from her eyes. Gently falling down her cheeks as the young woman trembled behind him. This man.. this Varys did not understand what he was calling up. His words and voice alone were killing her slowly from the inside not to mention the way his hand had transformed like that.
Scared? Oh yes. She was terrified. She could only hope to rely on Keiya and when and if he needed her she would help. Yet right now, she felt scared and she felt so terribly helpless. It was as if .. she had not grown at all.

"I should care because a blind eye is such an odd thing. People are afraid of it almost, despite it's lacking. They fear things that might see beyond the normal boundries..."
Varys grinned at the protectiveness the man showed. It showed he was afraid, perhaps not for himself, but for the girl. That was nearly as good, but not quite. If only he could scare the man to the point he feared for himself....
Then the shop keep yelled at the pair. Varys wheeled around quickly, glaring and in anger. Why had the woman yelled at them so? He felt the need to let a claw slide through her body. Varys' body began reacting to the want as well. A cracking and shifting of skin could be heard as his right hand began changing into the claw of Schrägstrich. This time the pain was too much to merely bear. Varys let out a sharp grunt of pain clutched his right hand with his left. He wouldn't try to kill the woman. She was too far and might have spell ready. This was rapidly turning into a dire situation.
Still his limb elongated and sharpened. The point of his his claw would rest near the ground even as Varys was standing up right. Schrägstrich was beginning to take a hold of his mind, it wanted to slide quietly. It wanted to get rid of witnesses and perhaps only leave the girl. Varys couldn't unfortunately. He merely yelled back through clenched teeth.
"There won't be any fighting you book whore, just mind not to startle customers. Hells, imagine what could happen to your precious tomes if you happened to jump on a pyromancer like that!"

As the man's arm deformed, this time it made a sickening bone-crunching noise as it twisted and grew more and more grotesque. He yelled at the shop keeper to mind her own business and not to startle customers like that. "Stop that..." Keiya said angrily. As he did so, a the breeze seemed to pick up a little, his eyes flaring. "Or so help me..." He could feel the young girls tears against his back, and it angered him that the source of her pain stood only feet away, and yet he could not touch the man... He had not done anything wrong yet...
"Keiya! Control yourself!" Emerald yelled hurriedly. The breeze suddenly died down, and Keiya's eyes lost some of their flame like appearance... But stayed firm against the strange figure. "Don't go overboard Keiya... Think of Madelyn..." Emerald said cautiously, her eyes also trained on Varys.
"I know Emmy..." He said almost apologetically. "Keep those nightmares of yours to yourself... She needs not more terrors to haunt her fragile mind" He said to the man, warning him firmly. The store owner stood there, still glaring at the group, making sure they didn't try anything. Keiya turned around, making sure to keep Madelyn's view obscured as he gently stroked her hair. "Come on... I'll buy the book another day..." He told her softly, as he returned the book to it's proper place and looked over to the store keeper. "Dreadfully sorry to have disturbed you madam..." His gaze falling back to Varys. "As for you... You need your head examined..." He finally turned to Emerald. "Come on... Before matters get out of hand..." He gently turned Madelyn to face the street so he could lead her out when he paused a final moment. "By the way madam... I do believe this man here is searching for a book on the art of Dementia... Judging from his grotesque transformations..." Saying no more, he lead the small girl out of the stores open tent and towards a small café where he hoped to calm her down.

It was only getting worse. This man .. or thing.. or monster. Was only getting angrier and by the sound of his voice he was enjoying the fear he struck in the people around him. She seemed to need Keiya even more as she began to hear the strange sounds of bones breaking or shifting and could only surmise that he was shifting yet again.
She shook visibly not only because of Varys but because of Keiya. The man across form his was really getting to him she could feel the breeze and the mana. Touching him she could feel it running through him. But Emmy got him calm before she could even try and she was thankful now more than ever for the sweet cat.
He turned to her and the fear was easily seen in her very demeanor. Her trembling. Her eyes filling with tears and fear. Her eyes pleading to him for safety. She felt him touch her hair gently and she let him coax her a little yet this did not quell the fear. No only leaving or this man acting more normal.. maybe appoligizing would help. She listened to him and nodded as her eyes held his until he moved them away to talk to the woman.
He turned her around gently so she wouldn't have to see. Thankful so thankful for Keiya that she wouldn't have had to run into this man alone. Because by herself she would have been frozen in fear. But with Keiya she at least had a little strength. She turned and let him lead her out of the store. She took his hand still yearning for comfort. She did not feel romantic towards Keiya yet he was a stable man that had never hurt her and always tried to help her. She clung to him as she forced herself not to look back into the tent letting Keiya lead him where he wanted.
"Thank.. thank you, Keiya." she said softly in a whisper as she looked down at the ground. She had never spoken to anyone but Jonathan. But here she needed him and he had been there. And she trusted him .. like a brother or a father both she had never had so this was as close as she could think. So yes, he deserved to know. She could speak. And she spoke to him because.. he deserved it.

Varys' claw twitched to a ready position as the man showed anger in an almost magical sense. He might decide to cast something soon and the claw wanted to be ready in response. After all a fireball would certainly burn him, but a single claw running it's length through the mans stomach would put an end to him faster.
Then the man stopped. It didn't make sense. Did he think better than to strike at such a close range? Did he just now realize the potential of the transformation? What was it that made him stop an attack so suddenly? Varys would never understand the concept of stopping to protect the girl and it never crossed his mind.
Then the word Dementia hit him as the man turned to walk away. How did he know?! Varys barely knew anything of the style of magic himself besides what he had been taught and as far as he knew no one else did either. Somehow, this man had known! How in the hells? He would find out how. He had to...
That was when Varys grabbed the books the man had left behind. 'Genealogy Of The 19th Century' was the one which Varys would find his answers. He knew it too. Being the good little monster he was he payed for it in full before making off with the book. He'd find that mans name and history and then find out how he knew of Dementia. He was the only lead...

As Keiya lead the girl away from the tent, he could feel the tension that had been building in her body slowly loosening... It was clear that she had wanted to escape that place, and Keiya couldn't stand to allow her to be hurt any further. And it was soon that they arrived at their destination, finding the small outdoor cafe. Keiya gently took the young girls hand and lead her to a nearby table. Emmy thought it best to join Keiya in his comforting of Madelyn, and so she leapt up and nestled herself into the blond's lap, purring softly.
Keiya had been just about to try and find some more comforting things to say, in the hopes of making her feel more at ease, but his chance to do so was removed as the young Madelyn shocked him. With just three words, Madelyn had completely rocked the foundation Keiya had been trying to build, on which to try and help her. But although he was clearly startled, his reaction was not a bad one. Her soft, sweet voice carried itself through his ears as though laced with gold. Her voice was almost magical, even when hushed to such a whisper.
"Madelyn... You..." He paused, but rather than state the obvious, he changed his words ever so slightly... "You trust me enough to speak to me?" He asked somewhat rhetorically. His chest felt warm and his face turned from surprise to a kindly smile. "It is I who should be thanking you... For you to speak to me..." He reached across the table and gently hooked his fingertips in with her own. "I am touched that you believe me to be worthy of hearing your sweet voice" His smile beaming, he felt a fatherly instinct taking over him... He had finally worked out what the sensation he had felt earlier had been. He wanted to protect and watch over her. He wanted to help her rebuild the image she held of men... To be able to comfort her when she felt that no one else could.
"Madelyn... I don't want today to make you feel that you cannot come into this city..." He started, realising the possible damage Varys may have caused. "It's true that, like anywhere, Babylos has it's dangerous element... But it also has it's brighter sides..." With his other hand, he gently clasped the back of her own hand, now holding it between both of his. "Please... Promise me that I will see you out here from time to time..." He asked, his beaming face now pleading. He wanted her to enjoy life. Not fear it. And this was the first step...

They sat down in the cafe and she did feel near instant relief to be somewhere that other man was not. His name was Varys and now she knew that there were truly bad people at Arcane. Since having moved into Arcane she had met only sweet and nice people aside from Der Metzgermeister. In that class she had been forced to face so very much. But she had come through her and Jonathan working as a team.
Emmy hopped up in her lap and immediatly the blonde girl's right hand began to stroke the soft fur of the black cat. It was soothing not only having the sweet cat in her lap but being able to run her hands down Emmy's back. Pets tended to have that kind of quality and now more than ever Madelyn thought about pulling her money from home together to get herself something a bit more cuddly than a bird.
She heard the utter shock and surprise in Keiya's voice and it made her blush. Jonathan, up til now had been the only one to hear her voice. Yet, Keiya had shown and proved himself more than worthy of such a gift. Granted it didn't mean she would speak all that more often yet he would know that when she needed to she would and could come to him. On her left hand was an engagement ring and it sparkled in the sunlight coming through the window the sapphire in the white gold glimmered. As Keiya took her left hand in his own she looked up into his eyes.
She had sat her shopping bags on the table as she had sat and now her eyes drifted to them before they drifted back to Keiya. She smiled gently up at him her blue eyes sparkling with that inner light once more. Yes, she had been afraid yet she had come away unharmed. It was much easier for her to come back to herself when unharmed than when she had been attacked or injured. Keiya too had been unharmed and she still remembered last time when she had been forced to heal him after the young girl had attacked him.
Her right hand stopped stroking the soft fur of Emmy for a moment and reached into the small bag at her side pulling out her pad and pen. *click* and the green inked pen was ready to go. She flipped open the page and left her hand in Keiya's as she felt very safe with him holding it. She felt.. as if nothing could touch her at the moment.
-I am lucky that you were there today. I'm sorry, for being so scared yet, I cannot help it. My past follows me whereever I go. But I am working to help myself. Many things have happened to me here. And they are all good. I promise not to stay away from the city but perhaps next time.. I'll bring a friend.-
She smiled a little as she handed the note pad to him laying it on the table in front of him before her right hand went back to stroking the cat's back. She was going to get a pet. This decided it. She didn't feel more relaxed ever unless Jonathan was with her and he couldn't be there all the time and definatly not forever. So .. maybe she needed a pet. Yes, she would have to get Jonathan and her to go shopping soon.

Keiya smiled when Madelyn told him that she would return. Partly fuelled by her words, because she had claimed to bring a friend, and so Keiya knew she would be fine. He gently squeezed her hand as he noticed how she refused to pull it away as she wrote. But as he did so, he finally looked down at her hand, noticing the expensive looking ring on her hand. And Keiya knew just what kind of ring it was too.
"I see you've met someone very special" He said with a smile. Emerald's head popped up at the mention of this and saw the ring for herself. He covered his other hand over her own again and clasped it between his two hands reassuringly. "He must be a very special guy for you to trust him so much" Emerald just purred and lay back down in Madelyn's lap.
A waitress arrived, and Keiya ordered an English Tea with a squeeze of lemon. "Very good sir... And what would the lady like?" She asked turning to the small girl with her pen and pad at the ready.
