I was thinking about this whilst taking a shower today, where all my great ideas come from, of course. As I was scrubbing myself clean, I was thinking about this board, and about magick in general. And so, I came to the question I'd like to know each of your individual answers on: How do you interpret Magick and its usage? The greatest thing about fantasy RPs, and fantasy Lit in general is that each author who incorporates the theory of Magickal prowess into their works has a different interpretation of it: What it looks like, who can use it, how it's accessed, and so on and so forth. So what do you guys all think? To kick us off, I'll give my interpretation of Psychic Abilities, as Xeryth uses them. Basically, all I do when I access Xeryth's psychic powers is to come into a meditative like state of being, where one is viewing the events before him in his mind. It's like an imagination gone wild, that can even keep track of objects in motion, and variables that a regular imagination could not account for. The next step, then, is using the imagination part of this perception to visualize something within the scene changing. Once that's done, the user simply concentrates upon this imaging, focusing on it and willing the imagination to become reality. Suddenly, when the pencil lifts off the desk and stabs Mr. H right in the eye... well, it's a Psychic attack. How 'bout you guys? What do you picture when your characters do their thing?

Magic? I see it as something unknown and mysterious. You have to understand that the basic philosiphy of magi cis manifesting something from nothing. It has ALWAYS made man desire it and crave it.
My personal view is that magic comes from one's soul and that to make it activate you need a catalyst. Such as blood, runes, words, or thought. WHat it is.. the soul. Pure and simple, you use to much at once and you will die because you use up your 'soul'.
That's my take.

Apparently, everyone else has absolutely no idea what it is they do, they just do it. Awesome. EDIT: Ah yes, Hakfu, the horrors of finals, I apologize. My old-man Brain forgets to comprehend the fact that some people here are in the midst of test-taking.

Lol.. maybe not, maybe not... I think the majority of us just think it would require too much thinking, and regarding how many of us have highschool finals this week...
It depends on the perception of magic, of course, as you said.
For example, magic can come from within you, such as your soul, as Negi said (As to whether the soul/spirit is replenishble depends on the person who's perceiving it), it could be a combine of both your body's energy and your spirit (think Naruto's Chakra, or Chi.. you know... 'balance'), it could be a combination of yourself using an innate other part of your body that doesn't work the same way and making you different from everyone else (thinking of the Jedi's Microcholoridians), it could be like using both your own personal energy to manipulate the things around you, like, if your angry, and you make everything burn around you...
Perception and perceieved. For the most of us, we just do what we believe is magic, as we perceive it, in all possible forms and shapes and possibilities..
As with magic, on a fantasy RP, it could be anything, and essentially has no ends on all possible combinations.

As I see it, magic is a fantasy trait given to a character out of boredom. To put it into perspective, the dead cannot be risen (for what we know, atleast). But, my character does it. How? Not by physical means, but magic. Majutsu, if you will. Elemental magic is another thing: Do you ever see Copper Mage or an FE Maiden? Of course not. When they say elements, they don't mean elements, so you can never take an RPers words serisouly, just walk around them suspiciously. When they would say elements, they really mean a fantasy version of fire, water, earth, air, void, thunder, wood, metal (mostly the Chinese elements), etc. Controlling such elements is not impossible in real life, but to do it in such a way as people have RPed, that happens to be magic.
Making things randomly appear, that is magic, because it can't really happen in real life, that we know of. I live by a creed, and it is that nothing is impossible, because what you would deam impossible is just something that hasn't been proven possible yet, so it is unknown. I don't say things cannot happen, because that is saying it is impossible. Magic is just another word for explaining a very unknown power. Magic hasn't been proven possible, and fantasy magic are things that come to life in story that haven't been proven possible. Using magic in RP and stories just keeps helps keep alive my creed of possibility. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying magic is real. It does not quite exist as what we call magic, but it does exist as when people see something that is unknown, so they just call it magic. Point in case, magic is an opinion.

My characters hands glow, as though it were a lightshow. I don't know, I tend to see tendrils of glowing light when people cast magic, as though the essence, their energy, came out in a particle or wave form, and is controlled by the persons mind.
its different for every character I come across, really.

In my eyes, Magic, the arts, Magick, Grammarye, what ever you wish to call it, is the use of physical, mental, and emotional triggers and energy to change and control the flow, and appearance, of reality itself.

To me, magic shares a common ground with religion, and that's that it's just considered something that can't be scientifically explained.

Magic...hmmmm let me think! Phae is a sword mage and so she focuses her power through her blade. She I think she subconsciously channels it through her body to her sword arm and then! to the blade. So I guess that's how it works. *Shrugs*

No she really doesn't use energy. She adds properties to her blade. Such as flame, or ice, some kind of shock mostly elemental things. But she can't cast them off their blade her magic is sword only.
