Name: Garth Janus Warblade
Occupation: Apprentice
Nationality: Australian
Height: 5 foot 9 inches
Weight: 173 pounds
Age: 16
Hair Color: Gray
Eye Color: Gray
Appearance: Standing at a middle-height Garth has the appearance of one who strives to keep himself in good physical condition. His skin is slightly weathered from being outside a lot in the Australian outback. His eyes have a burning fire not the fire of determination but, the fire of inner magic just waiting to be released. His clothes are in good condition having been well-taken care of though there is a slight dent in the metal plate of the left foot from where Garth kicked a cement wall too hard. His hair is naturally gray rather strange at his age and he doesn’t actually know why it just is. On his neck and his stomach are strange markings that were placed on him by his one-time mentor before he was sent to Arcane Academy. In addition there is a yin and yang symbol on the middle of his back. There is a certain refinement to his movement as if it was long decided before he actually did something.
There is a long and thin scar down his right arm from a training accident when he was practicing with a blade. His voice carries a tone of uncertainty as he tries to grasp the meaning of what he was set down to do. There is many times where he will just have his hands in his pockets and gaze afar as if trying to figure out the mysteries without anyone’s help. There are times when he appears to be thinking almost reminiscing about things that had happened. His weapons are new yet they are not unused showing a few scuffs here and there from hard training sessions. His clothes are well taken care-of and he always has a very neat appearance about him. Suggesting that he was raised in a good family even if it wasn’t the richest or the most powerful he still had his own unique air about him. Something that’s all his own that nobody has yet to see.
Personality: Garth generally is a good-natured person and he tries to do what he considers the best choice at the current moment. Keep in mind what he considers the best thing is a tad impulsive and he usually doesn’t realize the results of his actions until after he’s completed it. There is an almost indecisive quality as he doesn’t know whether his actions are the best or not. Yet relying on the impulsive instinct he will carry out the action and see whether or not it was his best choice. He sometimes wonders if he’s choosing the right decisions but, is generally comfortable about his choices. Still there is almost an untainted nature to him and by untainted it is not to say he is pure and good. He is neutral, uninfluenced, his choices having the representation of where he leans.
In large environments with a lot of people he feels a tad intimidated having been from an isolated area of Australia himself. Looking back one must realize that good-natured simply means he’s polite and tries not to act like a braggart. To best summarize Garth’s personality it basically boils down that his disposition is a direct reflection of his actions. Garth yearns to create his own story in the world to ascend to something meaningful in his life. Regardless actions his own personal actions and the actions of other’s directly influence him. Not in the usual personality influences but, something more meaningful and deeper that Garth has yet to identify himself. He is still doing his own soul searching and looking for answers.
History: March 21st, 1990, Northwest Region of Australia. Garth was born to two young parents both only eighteen and recently married. Now many would find it odd to have a last name such as Warblade but, the village he was born in never found such things strange. It is one of those rare places that you will almost never find elsewhere simply due to the rarity of it all. The village sits directly over a large ley-line of magical energy and its magical radiation has caused magical gifts that were previously not there to spring up. The village having been around for nearly two-hundred years has long grown used to magical gifts springing up and has enough set up rudimentary teachings. Discovered eighty years ago by Tracers recently some of the villages more gifted individuals have gone to the Academy. It was here on Earth in a village where magic was openly accepted that Garth was born.
Garth was born to young parents admittedly but, the village was a very strong and tight-knit community in a way the entire village was parents to each new generation. It was small enough to where everybody knew everybody the town keeping a limited population growth so as not to attract attention. The town’s magical secrets are kept safe and it appears normal and uninteresting when visitors come by. Due to the strong amount of magical lines that were developed there Garth’s magical talent well was a surprise. He didn’t have any. Or at least so it seemed. His father being a former student of the Arcane Academy a Mage Rank himself and his mother having a talent for healing magic, Garth was expected to have powerful gifts. Yet he showed no development in his early years and it wouldn’t be till an ex-Tracer came by that Garth would know.
Garth’s youth he was a rather odd one having hair that was naturally gray. It was strange. His hair changed color slowly from time to time but, always seemed to return to pure iron-gray. He wasn’t old it was obvious but, his parents just said that his hair was dyed so he wouldn’t get any odd looks. After all it did look rather odd for someone that wasn’t even a teenager to have gray hair so why not say it was a weird personality thing over saying it was natural. There were times when Garth grew envious of his friends who always were showing off their magical talent when they could get away with it. It was well hard on the young boy. Sure he liked his friend’s a lot but, he always felt so left behind and it frustrated him. He wanted his own magical abilities everyone had always whispered it was strange that he had no natural magic of his own.
”Mother? Why do all the other kids have magic and I doubt? I’m born from a magical line just like them. Dad was a powerful mage and you’re the village healer! Why?” Garth had his knees drawn up as he sat at a window-seat tears going down his face. He was envious of his friends and it showed. He had always kept everything hidden so his friends wouldn’t see it. Envy, despair, and disgust went through the young man. Why didn’t he have magical ability?! WHY?! It wasn’t fair. Everyone else had magical ability and he didn’t.
“Garth, sweetie, you have your own magic in you it just hasn’t awoken yet. In time you’ll have your own magical gifts and write your own history,” Serena stepped into view the beautiful woman’s raven locks falling to her hips almost. She always had rich and elegant hair as she sat down by her troubled soon. He always tried so hard to keep up with the others and he was hurt that he didn’t have his own magical gifts showing yet. She found it odd herself that he showed no gifts yet.
Both her and her husband’s lines always had development around the age of eight for their earliest magical gifts and yet here was her son struggling at thirteen without his own powers. He was trying so hard yet it was like a wall was in the way. There was something amiss about the boy that she couldn’t quite see. She had asked a seer on what she could do but, the seer said that only time would show the answer. Trust a seer to give a vague answer.
“When will I have it?” Garth asked.
“Soon enough, you just need patience.” She said softly.[/I]
At the age of fourteen something did change. An ex-Tracer had retired at the village he having made friends with several of the more important villagers and looking for a place to retire to. He had come across this village a few times during his travels to make certain that the village was abiding by common magical law. There was a peaceful serenity to this out of the way place and the children were always so mischievous yet good-natured. When he had first arrived at the village first time, well the first since his retirement from the Tracers, he saw a young lad sitting there on a stone wall distant-eyed as he watched the other kids use minor magical abilities. The ex-Tracer’s name was Fain Wilder and he was a very perceptive man who was very good at dealing with people.
Crunch.
Garth looked up when he heard someone step on the gravel near him and turned his attention behind him. There a man stood behind him looking well-traveled there was that hardened quality to his face that Garth couldn’t help but, recognize. This man had an aura to him of that couldn’t help but, be noticed and in some ways Garth felt slightly intimidated by the man. Fain gave a fatherly smile at the young man who was sitting their on the stone wall and watching something. Yes there was something about him that Fain couldn’t miss he had seen the look carried in the boy’s eyes several times before. The look of confusion and wondering why fate had dealt him such a bad hand.
“You have a look of one who’s missing something,” Fain said in his usual cheerful tone. Garth snorted and looked away. Just great a salesman coming to bother him didn’t these people have anything better to do?
“I’m not interested in mer….” Garth replied but, Fain cut him off.
“Merchant goods? Dear me no you’re missing something far greater then some cobbled together piece of crap,” Fain replied smoothly to which Garth blinked. This guy just got weirder and weirder it seemed. Fain’s greatest ability was sensing magic potential and he came forward casually and removed a glove revealing an elegantly tattooed hand that he placed on Garth’s forehead for a moment. Yes it was there locked behind a gate that had been reinforced with doubt. The boy just simply hadn’t been ready until now but, his gift relied in a field neither of his family lines have had before.
“Uh hello?!” Garth prodded Fain’s forehead and he broke out of the trance.
“Oh yes how rude of me, yes indeed,” Fain studied the young man with interest as Garth turned his attention back to the kid’s playing. “You want to know why you don’t have your magic yet,” Fain finally added. Garth look thunderstruck at the man I mean sure it was probably obvious but, there was…something very strange about this man. Yes Fain could show Garth the door but, he’d have to send Garth ahead to a place where he could truly unlock his potential. The Arcane Academy.
“Come with me,” Fain said and for once Garth didn’t ask a question, he barely knew this man before him but, right then he didn’t care. He had caught Garth’s attention like someone dangling a piece of fish in front of a cat, he wanted what this man was dangling.
For the two and a half years Garth would train under Fain’s patient tutelage striving his hardest to learn what the older man had to offer. He wanted to learn he wanted to no longer be left behind. He wanted to make something of himself and understand what he was truly born to do. Was it something great? Was it something minor? He didn’t care he just had a burning desire to accomplish his own story through the power of magic. The power to change the destiny of one or many but, more importantly the power to for once take destiny in his own hand’s and shape it for his own. That was what Garth truly wanted a chance to shape things at his pace and then find the understanding that he so deeply yearned for. He knew the chance well to acquire that chance rested solely on his determination to learn and to train. He was told stories, given lessons, given tests, all the while Fain never commented or complained at Garth when he failed at something. Perhaps that was something else that Garth had yearned for. Acceptance. Even if it was a master and apprentice relationship.
Garth learned to use his instincts learning to trust on gut instinct rather then a carefully thought out plan unless he had to. Learned to use wits and other important skills as he trained with the Tracer. He was taught tracking, survival, fighting, and the double-edge of magic. How to respect and how to act. Fain in truth was training Garth to become something far much more then the child understand. He was preparing him not for the now but, for down the road when Garth came into his own magical strength his own power causing him to soar. Soar on the wings of destiny and choose the path that he wants to take. Interestingly enough he noticed that Garth’s actions deeply affected his disposition and more importantly showed physical changes. While they weren’t major they were numerous enough in small minor bits and pieces that it caught Fain’s interest. Marked by destiny almost his actions deciding where he would go. It was rather interesting to say the least but, how far would that magic go elsewhere? Garth continued to train hard until his sixteenth year by then Fain having already secured a teleporter.
”Garth,” Fain called and the young man came forward.
“Master Wilder?” Garth said respectfully he had changed a bit and had grown mature over the training something that Fain was slightly relieved over. He swore that the boy would never grow-up and check that tongue back when the training had first started. It was a mutual experience for the both of them. Both of them had changed over all of this. Inscribed on Garth now were a pair of tattoos. One was the one around his neck symbolizing focus and concentration. The one on his stomach which was currently covered symbolizing the trials that the young man had went through. Fain knew that they could represent something more since the boy has talent in symbology.
“You’re training with me is complete,” He said calmly.
“What?” Garth was confused.
“I can only teach you so much. I’ve arranged for you to be taken to the Arcane Academy and put in your letter recommendation myself. A few friends there will make sure that you’re taken care of and have money to spend when you want to explore the city surrounding it,” Fain would have said more but, he felt the young man hug him tightly. Garth had dreamed of going to the Academy a place where the destiny of one could truly be shaped. Fain saw the sword and staff strapped to the apprentice and knew that Garth had worked very hard to at least properly use and care for them. Yes the boy would be just fine his parents having approved of him going. In fact there they were now dropping off Garth’s bags as a teleporter cracked into view. Garth looked up at his parents. Garth a striking image of his father except his hair and eyes were gray where his father’s were raven black. It was strange almost to compare the two.
“Before you go Garth there’s something you should take. It would look rather odd for an apprentice to be without a familiar of some sort wouldn’t you say? Wouldn’t want you getting lonely.” Garth’s eyes opened as he a young dragon yes a DRAGON step into view. His eyes went wide as he studied the beautiful creature its shimmering scales as it gazed with intelligent eyes at Garth. The creature spoke something to Garth’s mind and he gently moved over and stroked the dragon’s snout the creature giving a soft noise…
Once the meeting and bonding of master and familiar or as Garth and Kisanth like to say, equals, was done the teleporter took Garth and his new familiar to the portals. From there it was just a short trip before he was on Babylos, more importantly in front of the Academy. Where he could build his own destiny. He paused for a moment Kisanth nudging him onwards. Onwards into a path he never thought that he would reach until now. The path of building one’s own destiny at the Arcane Academy, a place that was neither good nor evil only helped students becoming mages in their own rights and realize their potential. Potential. Garth liked the sound of that word as he savored it for a brief few moments. Was potential what he had been really seeking?
Or was it that chance to realize his dream?
The chance to make a name for himself.
The chance to choose his destiny.
The chance to become a mage.
Style: Symbology
As Wordology is the Language of Magic, Symbology is the alphabet. Similar to Alchemy, by creating circles one can cast spells. However, unlike the Solomon seal in the circles of Alchemy, these circles hold the words of the language of magic. Furthermore, in the language of magic, there are only adjectives, verbs and nouns..... do to the two ideas of altering something and creating something using mana. It is said that the symbols used in the circles of Symbology look like a cross between Japanese, Latin and Arabic, yet each symbol in Symbology has a specific meaning, like Chinese. Furthermore, the more things that the user wants to alter would result in adding more words to the circle. Periods in Symbology are other circles over lapping the initial circle, holding words in them. However, unlike periods here used to separate ideas, circles are used to rate the power of a spell that is required. Last, in time a Symbology user can used Symbology without circles, but only if they can correctly create a mental image of a Symbolic Circle on a certain area. Like creating a mental circle on the wall of someone's house to create fire. To take this on a further level Garth sometimes has premade symbols on cards that are used in the magic. This by no means lessens a spell cost it just helps remind him what magic he is using and helps him focus.
Strengths: Having training from an ex-Tracer, Garth has learned a variety of skills that are extremely useful and gives him abilities outside of his only recently cropping magical abilities. His resilient health is another strange factor as his metabolism which is incredibly high. He shrugs off disease and poison at an incredible rate whether this is an innate ability it is not sure. Still Garth’s main strength is adaptability and being able to work with things quickly even if he has little training. Having been trained to rely on his instinct he’s become a fast thinker and that improves his reaction time overall.
Weaknesses: Perhaps Garth’s greatest problem is having come into his magical talent so late in life he has no spells whatsoever. In fact he has a lot of learning to do if he expects to hold his own in a spell duel. If someone uses an extremely powerful ability in front of Garth (using a lot of energy in an attack) he may feel slightly intimidated throwing his rhythm off-balance. However, he's dependant on symbols or cards to focus his magic right now. Without them he'll have a rough time in fact nearly an impossible time learning a spell.
Spell List: Currently none.
Weapons/Gear: These are the current weapons and gear that Garth uses.
[/li][li]Elexorien - This beautifully crafted long-sword is made with an elegant craftsmanship that has long said to have disappeared from the world. Ancient runes cover the hilt and grip of the weapon the runes from a long-forgotten language. Sharper and tougher then expected Elexorien can cut through quite a few things. The sword’s beautiful and strange design gives this blade a unique profile and wield. Garth sometimes uses both hands for a power swing. The sword is approximately four and a half feet long.
[/li][li]Valshaerin – This is perhaps a strange staff well strange is putting it lightly. Made of light-weight yet durable metal the staff is excellent in fighting or having other uses to it when one thinks. At one of the ends a sharp foot-long spear tip can be emitted at the touch of a pressure grip making it useful of a surprise stab. More uses could be fitted in the staff given time. Like Elexorien, Valshaerin has a craftsmanship that is not exactly common in the world of today.
[/li][li]Memory – Garth’s only ranged weapon that was gifted to him by his father who used it to supplement his spells when running low on energy. Memory is a beautifully crafted pistol having laminated-steel craftsmanship. In addition there is chrome plating on the weapon to give it a more elegant look. The Star of David is engraved on both sides of the grip in white gold and elegant roses were engraved on either side of the barrel. The gun is a .41 caliber shot weapon that takes twenty-five shot clips. The pistol is rather dense making it useful for a close-range bludgeoning weapon for pistol-whipping action.
[/li][li]Ammunition Pouch - This is a simple belt pouch that carries up to fifteen spare clips for Garth's gun. The pouch keeps the clips nice and neat and is also water-proof. Perfect for the shooter on the go.
Ammunition: This is the ammunition that Garth carries.
[/li][li]Armor Piercing Rounds - The standard round of choice for punching through armor this given up overall punch for being able to get through armor.
[/li][li]Silver Rounds - Blessed silver ammunition for encountering anything unnatural this is Garth's trump card and ace in the hole for dealing with the beasties.
[/li][li]Standard Rounds - Standard ammunition and fit for all occasions this is the standard round of choice when Darian is using live ammunition.
[/li][li]Rubber Rounds - When Garth is sparing or simply doesn't want to kill a target these magnificent rounds are the rounds of choice leaving only painful bruises over permanent damage.
[/li][li]Short-Range Panzer Faust - Developed by special agencies to give a handgun more of a punch the weapon is fit over a pistol barrel-end with a special attachment. To fire the rocket one must fire a live standard round to send it flying. Keep in mind these have a limited range of fifty meters and a blast radius of five meters. Garth only carries a few of these at a time given the fact he likes them as a trump card.
