Name: Tas Rakee
Occupation: Apprentice Circlet-Caster
Nationality: British/Japanese
Height: 5"3
Weight: 94.6 lbs
Age: 17
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Yellow
Appearance:
Tas' clothing style is not an especially fashionable one. She doesn't much care about what's "in" or "out" in current times, focusing more on "is it comfortable and functional?". To this end she is generally found wearing loose jeans (black or deep blue) with a black belt, while for her upper body she ranges from shirts to t-shirts to jumpers, depending on her mood and the weather. Her sole fashion concession with these is that she'll avoid clashing colours, trying for matching or at least complimentary.
Her only regular colthing, aside from the hard-wearing black boots with steel toecaps, is a small metal case on the back of her belt and her customized desert eagle that lives in a holster on her right hip. She will always have these items with her, going so far as to keep wearing the holster if she can't bring her gun with her for whatever reason.
Tas has a slim figure which is well proportioned to her height, having some curves but nothing excessive. Her distinguishing features appearance wise are her long hair, worn tied back in a ponytail that reaches her waist, and her piercing yellow eyes. They often seem to cut right into a person, regardless of if she's intentionally staring or not.
Personality:
Generally friendly, very curious and once she's made her mind up extremely stubborn. If she realises there's something she doesn't know about someone it'll really get her worked up... she isn't a gossip though. Just curious.
If she gets into a bad mood she can become hostile for little aparrant reason. There will also be the occasional verbal outburst if she finds something disagreeable or annoying.
History:
Tas' history is nothing especially glamerous... or even nasty for that matter. She was born in a small village near London, England, to her parents Allen and Xin Rakee. They were a young couple and quite kindhearted, so as their only child she grew up with few mishaps. They were careful to instill a moral code in her, and to leave her content with what she had rather than what she wanted, and they were happy.
Then a few months after her ninth birthday they discovered she had magic. It'd been a sunny day in their back garden, Xin was sunbathing and Tas was playing with some rune stones from her birthday. Allen was at work. Then the runes Tas was playing with burned brightly with a pale blue light and a sunflower appeared in the middle of the pattern. Xin just looked at it and then shrugged, calling Tas over for a hug. She had been suprised, sure, but not shocked as both she and Allen knew that magic existed. Her aunt had been an elementalist, after all. Allen was quite happy, and a little concerned, when he found out about the incident.
Some discussion followed, and then just after her 10th birthday they decided to move to another village a few miles south of Oxford. A quiet hamlet which ensured privacy and, more importantly, was populated by people who knew about magic. In her second week there Tas had a talk with some of the other kids and a few adults, and under pressure showed them what little magic she knew. The reaction was underwhelming to say the least, the kids were skeptical and unimpressed, while the adults shrugged and made many suggestions that she try doing things a different way. When she asked why she was told "Because that old style is impractical. This way is much faster." Unfortunately many of the adults suggested that she follow their own chosen styles, which pushed her to the point where she simply said no. She'd started with runes that were hers, so she'd continue with what she had. Other ways may be faster but, as she'd been taught for many years, faster does not mean better. Her stubborn streak kicked in and that was that, she was going to master what she learned was known as Circlet Style.
Over the following seven years she stuck firmly to this decision and made a great deal of headway in her chosen style. Her curiosity helped her build up a good range of spells and she learned more runes to play around with, increasing her potential greatly. Most of her free time was given to studying the runes, fiddling with combinations and practicing what she had already worked out... no sports or bars for her like so many of her fellow teens. She was too busy making her chosen style her own.
It wasn't long after she turned seventeen that Miss Evans, an old shaman from down the road, suggested that she should apply to the acadamey. Her dedication had been noticed by many in the village, as well as her curiosity and constant questioning, and she saw it as the next step for her. Plus if she went she'd not keep bothering them. Tas agreed and, with her parent's approval, applied to join the Acadamey as a student. It took nearly five months until she got a response, which was an approval. So she packed some things, said her goodbyes and moved to the Acadamy to set to with her studies. The resources of her new home were far greater than in her village, so Tas felt she had much to look forward to.
Circlet Style
Circlet Style is a form of magic that is rarely seen in current times, and even at its peak was scarce. Practitioners of the art are so rare that Circlet Style is mostly self-discovered and self-taught, resulting in each caster having a different range of magical abilities. Fortunately it is a style that lends itself well to self-discovery, provided you know what runes to use with it, but one reason for its rarity is that it's hard to advance with it if you lack the right mindset. It isn't actually known how many runes Circlet Style has at its disposal, but it is estimated to be well over 50.
Runes are the source of Circlet Style. They serve to focus the power of the user, and when combined appropriately in a circle, or pattern of circles, unleash magical power in a staggering range of forms. From elementalism to hexes, necromancy to shamanism, and all other forms of magic besides, Circlet Style is capable of producing similar effects. But the obvious question now is, if Circlet Style is so flexible, why is it so rare?
Put simply, it's much easier to focus in a mainstream form of magic than to do the repetitive, mind-numbing experimening needed to achieve a new Circlet Style spell for yourself. Only a curious, inquisitive and overall stubborn mind will really excel with Circlet Style, as the spells can not be simply taught. Every caster must experiment with a spell until they get the right balance of runes, pattern and energy spending for themselves, regardless of if another Circlet Style user is aiding them.
Another reason is that the style is poorly suited to stealth, due to brightly glowing power circles and an everchanging background pitch during casting. Only a blind, deaf person has a chance of not noticing such spells being cast.
In practice, Circlet Style is all about the arrangement of runes in a circle or pattern of circles. This does not involve drawing the circles, as glowing circles of light (complete with the chosen runes) appear as the spell is being cast. They also come in a range of colours, depending on the intended effect of the spell.
A given spell gains power from the runes it contains, so including more runes (they don't have to be different ones) will always result in a stronger spell. But here lies a problem... adding more runes to a single casting circle will drastically increase its energy consumption. Splitting the runes into several circles, on the other hand, has a huge increase for the casting time of the spell. So all powerful Circlet Style spells are invariably slow to cast, and can also consume huge amounts of energy.
One way around the excessive energy demands that all Circlet Style user find (it's practically the only spell common to all users) is using an alternate form. By casting spells from a different form the energy use is halved, but these forms tend to come with a host of weaknesses and stupidities. There is actually a documented case of one caster winding up with a water fountain as their alternate form... they started practicing elementalism after that. The alternate form is based on the mind of the user, so each user can only learn one form and each one is individual to that user.
Also, while casting a spell there is an audible background humming that grows stronger as the spell builds up. The stronger the spell, the louder it gets. In extreme cases it can even make the ground tremble a little, like a small earthquake.
Strengths:
~Tas' particular version of Circlet Style is mostly oriented towards fighting or distracting groups of enemies. This makes her strong in group fighting.
~Her alternate form, "Armour Form", is a hovering metal construct. It is extremely resistant to most physical attacks, and technically it can fly. Striking it will not make it fall to the ground, even if you tumble it. Its floating abilities are strong enough to carry up to three average-weight humans as passengers on its back.
~Healing and repairs transfer between forms. Example: Tas loses an arm. She shifts to Armour form and someone welds a rough replacement onto her (a painful process though). When she shifts back she will have her arm again, tbut it will be in poor condition and probably have broken bones, heavy bleeding, etc. Well... it's better than losing it permenantly, right?
~Tas' Strafe Pistol (or Strafe Cannon when using her alternate form) is an excellent weapon for long-range combat. This is due to its built-in enchantments and not Tas' skill in using it.
~Tas is fairly tough in human form, and very durable in her alternate form. This is good as it gives her a chance to employ her magic in battle without being knocked out too quickly.
~In either form Tas has a limited ability to sense magic around her. This is extremely vague as she developed it to assess the strongest ambient elements for some of her spells, so for tracking specific sources it is hopelessly inaccurate. It also isn't up to tracking spiritual energy.
Weaknesses:
~While her spells are strong against groups, they are unusually inefficient against single targets. Also many of her spells work on friend and foe alike, which can be dangerous to her allies.
~Her alternate form, "Armour Form", is technically an inanimate object. So it is vulnerable to all spells that deal with such targets, in addition to the spells she is vulnerable to as a human.
~"Armour Form" is not very agile in its hovering movements, it can't dodge bullets and needs time to accelerate to speed. Any bullets that hit it fuse to its external armour and need removing before Tas can change back to her human form.
~"Armour Form" is free-floating, so any kind of impact (from a fist to a bullet) can set it tumbling if Tas isn't careful. This tumbling is very distracting for her, making her lose focus on what's going on until she stabilises herself again. In extreme cases it can also make her feel physically ill.
~All damage and injury transfer from one form to the other. Example: Armour Form is severely dented and scratched in combat. Upon shifting back to her human form Tas will have extensive bruising, scratches, and so on.
~Tas' Strafe Pistol (Or Strafe Cannon) is not very accurate at close or medium range. This is actually her fault rather than that of the weapons, as she isn't very good at aiming.
~Despite her time and training, Tas isn't especially good at dodging in her human form either. This is down to her reactions being a bit on the sluggish side most of the time.
~Tas is generally bad at physical combat. The only time she can hope to do damage is at range with her gun, unless she gets a lucky shot at shorter range. Up close she is hard pressed to inflict harm or even defend herself half the time. If she couldn't withstand a modest amount of punishment (or a lot in her Armour Form) she'd be a serious liability in combat.
Weapons/Gear:
Tas has two items that she always has with her; the Strafe Pistol and the Charge Box. The pistol morphs into a Strafe Cannon if she shifts to her Armour Form while carrying it.
Strafe Pistol
The Strafe Pistol is Tas' personal handgun, a modified Desert Eagle XIX using .50 rounds. Its has been modified by Tas with her magic, giving it a deep blue matte finish and enchanted ammo. The clip has also been expanded from the usual 7 rounds to 9 rounds.
The gun enchants all rounds fired from it, granting them limited self-propulsion for 5 seconds and the ability to turn at a rate of 45 degrees per second until impact. The rounds steer themselves towards a target pictured in Tas' mind when she fires, giving the weapon very high accuracy at range despite her lack of aiming skills. At short to medium distances, however, the bullet usually doesn't have enough time to turn towards its target because of its high speed. So against few opponents she regularly empties an entire clip without hitting anyone.
Tas doesn't carry spare ammo for her gun, instead reloading it by means of a spell she developed for that purpose. Also, if Tas shifts to her alternate form while carrying the Strafe Pistol it morphs into the Strafe Cannon, which is attached to her Armour Form.
Should the pistol be lost or ruined for whatever reason, Tas can replace it over roughly a week or two. If someone else aquires it the enchantment works for them too, but they will need to arrange their own supply of .50 ammo.
Strafe Cannon
The Strafe Cannon is the big brother of the Strafe Pistol, firing 60mm armour piercing rounds. It can hold up to 3 rounds at once, is reloaded in the same manner as the Strafe Pistol, and also shares the pistol's enchantment. While good against any kind of vehicle or large target, it suffers the same poor accuracy at short or medium range as the Strafe Pistol. In fact it's even worse at such ranges, as its rounds move nearly three times faster than the pistol shots do and it has less ammo.
The Strafe Cannon, while it exists, is a permenant part of Tas' Armour Form. It's not an attachment, and as such can't be dislodged from her short of disintegrating the part of her it's attached to. Once separated from the Armour Form the cannon morphs back into the Strafe Pistol.
Charge Box
The charge box is a small case usually found attatched to the back of Tas' belt. Inside is a small explosive charge about the size of a CD, which can be removed and stuck to any surface. This explosive is magical in nature and detonates whatever it is applied to, along with itself, a set time later. Tas visualises how long she wants the charge to wait when she sets it, the limit being 30 minutes. Additional charges can only be created by using her forge spell on the charge box.
The charges have limits to their power... a van is about their maximum. Anything larger will not detonate with the charge when it explodes. They also don't work on living creatures.

Tas has the ability to manifest circlets without actually casting a spell. She does this and then gradually changes their conficuration, adding a bit here, moving a bit there, until she finds something that works. This is the way that she develops new spells in her own style.
It can sometimes be dangerous though, as the manifested circlet is still charged with magic. A wrong combination can sometimes bring a bad result immediately.
